Mother's Day Reflection One

May 7, 2021

In her brilliant book, Christ Our Black Mother Speaks, Dr. Christina Cleveland asks this profound question: “What if we took seriously the truth that God is not male or white?” Sit with that. Consider how it could change everything.

As we approach Mother’s Day, we will be presented with all the usual cultural assumptions about motherhood. We will be encouraged to honor an idealized motherhood without attending to the real experiences of women in a patriarchal world and without questioning the ways in which the predominant image of God in the West as white and male harms all of us -- including mothers and children. May this Mother’s Day be different. May we hear the summons to encounter the feminine face of God, to experience the mothering of God, and to be drawn forward into listening to the experiences of all women whether they are mothers of visible children or invisible ones.
